Eco Celebration - Year 4 Beach clean & choosing sustainable fish
When we started our topic, Blue Planet, we were excited to learn about all the different creatures that live in the sea. But then we found out that plastic is causing a problem for all the creatures that live in the ocean.
We decided to do something about this and went on a litter pick in the local area. We realised that litter is going down the storm drains, into the rivers and into the ocean. Because of this, we decided to go on a litter pick at Ogmore Beach too. We sent our data to the Marine Conservation Society, so they can use it to help fight marine pollution.
We also learnt that some fish are being overfished. This can have an impact on food chains, with some sea creatures becoming extinct. We decided to try to eat more sustainable fish and record how we got on. Did you know that sustainable fish have the Marine Stewardship Council symbol on them? It looks like this (point to symbol on the screen).
During the first week, we ate the fish that we normally eat. Then, in the second week, we tried to eat sustainable fish. Our results show that we ate 160% more sustainable fish in the second week! AND that we ate 80% less non-sustainable fish in the second week. By doing this, we help look after the ecosystems and food chains in the ocean, ensuring no species becomes extinct!
We wanted to share and celebrate the things we have done with you. Please remember to put litter in the bin or take it home to recycle when you are out and about. If possible, try to use less single use plastic. And finally, try to buy sustainable fish for your dinners, as this will ensure that our oceans are diverse and thrive. By Year 4
