What is the Welsh Language Charter?
The Welsh language is one of the treasures of Wales. It is part of what defines us as people and as a nation. The Welsh Assembly Government's ambition is to see the number of people able to enjoy speaking and using Welsh reach a million by 2050.
The simple objective of the Language Charter is to provide a clear framework, which can be used to promote and increase the use of Welsh by children in a whole school context. In a nutshell, the Charter's main aim is to promote a strong Welsh ethos in schools and to provide a range of enriching activities that propel the children to enjoy learning Welsh.
The Language Charter exhorts participation from every member of the school community, and members of the school workforce and council, the pupils and their parents, school governors and the wider community are all encouraged to take full ownership of it. The Criw Cymraeg are instrumental in leading and driving the Language Charter forward at Birchgrove Primary.
The Criw Cymraeg have been assigned the following roles:
- To promote a Welsh ethos in Birchgrove Primary School by encouraging learners to speak Welsh. They do this by handing out Tocyn Iaith when they hear welsh being spoken.
- To deliver the Welsh phrase of the fortnight in assembly.
- To implement Cymraeg Campus and gather evidence to achieve our school targets.
- To teach Welsh games on the yard.
The aim is to achieve the gold award over a three or four year period. In July 2019, we were successful in being awarded the bronze award. We have now started working towards the targets for the silver award.
